Fruit Trees in Small Spaces

March 14, 2012

Colby Eierman, our Director of Gardens at Stone Edge, has written a new book about growing fruit trees in small spaces. Colby describes  in great detail how anyone can have their own orchard no matter how small. He takes the reader from planning and preparing the site all the way through to how to harvest the home-grown bounty of fruit. The book contains hundreds of photographs of common and unique varieties of stone fruit, pome fruit, and citrus.

After choosing the fruit trees and their location, Colby gives step by step instructions on the care of the trees and how to naturally amend the soil so they remain robust and healthy for years to come. There is a chapter on pruning trees and how to properly form them for beauty and increased production of fruit-including espalier techniques.

Colby shares with the readers some of his vast knowledge as a gardener and landscape designer and encourages us all to experience the joy and satisfaction of growing our own food, even in a small space. Those without a lot of space can even grow an orchard in pots and containers.

The last chapter is “A Bounty of Seasonal Fruit Recipes” filled with recipes from Chef Mike Emanuel such as peach leaf wine, quince paste, and pears poached in red wine.
